How can i dye my hair fire engine red?

i do not have virgin hair, the last time my hair was dyed was december 2010 and i only got blonde highlights in the first layer. It is now summer and i am still young so i would like to dye my hair a nice vibrant red, without going to the salon, so what would be the safest way to dye my hair, its super curly and thick-ish. Would it be safer for me to buy blonde box dye, then use panic manic and dye it red, or should i just get fire engine red box dye? and if i get fire engine red box dye, what are some good brands too use?
